Nagallowah Ngurra Native Edible Garden

Blaxland East Public School

The aim of our project is to create a native edible garden around our new yarning circle so that all our students can learn about growing and cooking bush food, their use and the history of Indigenous agriculture, surrounded by a habitat designed for rainbow lorikeets, our school totem. The children will be involved in painting the garden rocks for garden borders, measuring and marking area for plants, researching the plants, creating plant labels, growing and caring for the plants and cooking with them as part of our kitchen garden program and harvesting for our canteen. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include the connection students feel to the land while gathering to learn about local bush foods, how grow them in a perennial garden and prepare in tasty dishes. The students will gain practical knowledge in this natural living classroom that will encourage to care for our environment and creatures in it.
