The aim of our project is to grow a vegetable garden with healthy food we can harvest and eat; establish a worm farm for scraps from ‘sip and crunch’ left overs; and support a native bee population by having a honey producing hive (with non-stinging bees) with the running and involvement of the junior primary children. The children will be involved in planning, planting, growing, harvesting, preparing and cooking the garden produce through sustainable practices; harvesting honey and cooking with it; and using the bees wax for design and technology projects. Also using gardening as a way of relaxing, calming and connecting with their feelings and the earth. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include: creation of a new environment for the worm farm; producing the compost (full of nutrients) for the soil which plants will grow in; a new veggie garden and a bee hive to support bee populations in the area; and engaging with and observing the environment, plant life cycle, growth and changes.
