The Coomera Rivers Bee Hotel

Coomera Rivers State School

The aim of our project is to engage students in a biological science inquiry project where they examine the life cycle of the bee and how bees value add to our environment. Students will promote the importance of native bees to our wider school community through other community projects. The children will be involved in a collaborative project supported by members of the local Men’s Shed as they construct bee hotels to be positioned in and around our recently established vegetable garden and yarning circle. Students will also be planting native species of shrubs around the yarning circle. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project is aligned with the biological sciences component of Australian curriculum. The native bee hotels will provide rest and revival points for pollinators in the neighbouring native gardens. Socially, it provides students an opportunity to co-construct learning with members of the community.
