Exploring Wiradjuri plants and culture

CSU Early Learning and Nurture Centre

The aim of our project is to plant a series of garden beds containing native plants of significance in Wiradjuri culture. The plant beds will weave around our playground, providing the children with a trail of gardens for sensory exploration, investigation of locally native plants and education about their traditional value for food, shelter and medicine. The children will be involved in learning about different plant species of significance in Wiradjuri culture, and then choosing which of these species to plant in our garden. They will also help to plant the seedlings in the new garden beds, which will assist in their ability to recognise the different plants in their environment. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include further enhancing and embedding indigenous culture into our curriculum; providing our children with an awareness of native plants and environmental restoration work by designing and planting their own garden; and supporting our children in learning to nurture the new garden by being closely involved in the entire process.
