Bush Tucker Gardens

St Michael's College Early Learning Centre

The aim of our project is to establish bush tucker gardens that provide regular, hands-on opportunities for children to learn about Indigenous culture and how different native plants can provide sustenance. This will hopefully form the basis of a meaningful connection to and a deep respect for Indigenous perspectives and their innate connection to the land. The children will be involved in researching local native bush tucker plants, preparing the area for planting, helping to plant the gardens, taking part in maintenance and care of the gardens and engaging in learning about how the local Gubbi Gubbi people would have used them traditionally (for food or medicine etc.). The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include opportunities for children to explore how Indigenous people grew, cared for and prepared food and learn the significance of native plants in providing food/shelter for local, native fauna. Native plants typically use less water and the produce can be used in our cooking, so children will learn about sustainability.
