The aim of our project is to create a blue-banded bee habitat and bushfood garden to complement the vegetable garden projects already in place at our school. The children will be involved in planting blue and purple flowering plants to attract blue-banded bees, creating mud bee hotels, ongoing monitoring of bee hotels for other bee species and bushfood harvests. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include students learning about the life cycle and behaviours of blue-banded bees and preparation of bushfoods. Hardy Indigenous species that are well adapted to our climate will contribute to school campus greening. Bushfood harvesting will create links with education programs delivered by local Indigenous elders and bushfoods catering service.
