Bally’s Garden Gurus

Balgownie Public School

The aim of our project is to restore our current garden, to educate our students on suitable vegetables for our climate and native bee attracting flowers and shrubs. We will install a native bee hive and teach the children about how our pollinator garden will support our bees and how our bees will support our garden. The children will be involved in researching native plant species, selecting and planting; vegetables, bee attracting flowers and native shrubs from seed and tube stock, creating a suitable space for the hive and maintaining compost bins. The older students will mentor the younger students throughout the year. The expected (environmental and educational) outcomes of the project include our students will learn about how native bees and pollinators play a vital role in the pollination of our plants and vegetables. They will also learn about plants native to our area. The garden will increase students responsibility, love of nature, cooperation and support their wellbeing.
