Whittlesea Primary school Bush Tucker Garden

Whittlesea Primary School

Our project involved planting bush tucker garden beds in our existing outdoor Indigenous learning space. The project aimed to enhance the students’ understanding and passion for sustainable food sourcing. The garden compliments the school’s existing veggie garden and provides students with an understanding of the types of foods that are indigenous to our area. The bush tucker garden was planted by the students (with some help from the adults!) and is being maintained daily with students taking turns to water the plants and weed. The students are really enjoying watching the plants grow and flower this spring. The bush tucker garden is encouraging native animals, birds and insects to feed from and live among the plants allowing the students to see how sustainable planting benefits the whole ecological system. The local council were able to assist us with some signage to showcase the types of bush tucker plants that have been planted. Overall, this was a very rewarding experience for the students and the school.
