Vegetable Garden and Improving Waste Management

Charlestown South Public School

Through the construction of planter boxes, we involved students in the process of researching the types of vegetables appropriate for the season, planting new seeds and seedlings, watering and harvesting the products that we have grown to be consumed in class cooking or shared within our school community. The students sell the produce to staff and parents, enabling them to use the funds to purchase new seeds and seedlings. We have established a routine of students depositing their food scraps into the green bins to be collected by council. We then access the compost from council for our gardens. This has encouraged students to be more mindful of green waste in their homes. Many children have shown a desire to establish vegetable gardens with their own families, especially during this COVID period. Students and families volunteer to care for the gardens during holiday periods to ensure gardens are watered and produce harvested and used, not wasted.
