Our aim was to increase environmental awareness and empower students to make a positive and sustainable impact on the environment. Our community and the students participated in the establishment of an organic waste management project by introducing sustainable organic waste management practices to reduce waste going into landfill. We established composting worm farming and recycling practices, educating students how to collect and manage the organic waste, as well as how to set up and manage worm farms. A school based ‘Green Team’ led the project – working closely with Science students from a nearby university, we had several incursions and sessions to build understanding of the benefits of worm farms and composting. The organic nutrient rich products were used as soil enrichment to enhance our established and thriving vegetable and community gardens, which are managed by families within our community. The students loved learning about how to reduce waste and really enjoyed establishing and managing the worm farms.
