Our Environment Club has now been formed at the school and is made up of interested parents and students who responded to a newsletter article. The club has worked together on a Friday after school, for about a year, to regenerate an area that was once overgrown, dumped with rubbish and sitting idle. This group has worked hard to revitalise thirteen raised vegetable beds by weeding, planting herbs and vegetables and enriching the soil. The students involved really got stuck into mixing the compost, feeding the worms food scraps and using the worm juice.
We have now started producing compost from four large compost bins and have seven productive worm farms operating. We were also able to involve the school Canteen and After School Care who now contribute their food waste on a regular basis. Parents in the group have enjoyed chatting about improving sustainability and recycling practises at the school and are also working to improve bin signage and waste processes. We have also cleaned and improved a meeting area, near the vegetable beds, where we can store tools and meet and chat which makes it easier to work. This has given the group a feeling of connectedness and a sense of pride in improving the green spaces and sustainability of the school.
