Create our own Vegetable Garden

Canley Vale ELC

Our aim for this project was to help all stakeholders in our centre to become more aware of healthy eating styles that would fulfill the children’s holistic learning in the aspects of their physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development. The children were really enjoying in the learning experiences throughout the process of developing and implementing our garden project such as setting up the garden beds, selecting different kinds of plants and vegetables to grow, feeding the worms, learning about composting, watering the plants, etc.

Our children loved learning about the differences between healthy and unhealthy food and food preparation. It helped them develop healthy eating habits and build a sense of respect and caring for the natural environment. The children were involved in taking on responsibility for the garden’s ongoing care and maintenance. They particularly enjoyed learning about the five senses where they felt the dirt with their hands, taste of vegetable, different crunching sound when they ate, and the different smells of varieties of vegetables.
