Composting & Worm Farm

Sacred Heart Primary School

Our project aims to improve the waste management practices of our school. Coloured bins will be purchased for each classroom, indicating recycling, green waste or rubbish. Students will become responsible for ensuring that our waste is put in the correct coloured bin in classrooms and around the school. Learning activities throughout the year will incorporate the “Sort it Out!” rule that explains the importance of recycling and managing out waste correctly. Our project is for students to recycle food scraps through a worm farm which will then provide compost and fertilizer for our vegetable garden. The worm farms we will turn our organic waste into nutrient rich fertiliser. This project will reduce the waste from our school. Our project will involve all students and staff to recycle food waste, plus waste from the canteen and school kitchen program. Nutrients will be used in our raised vegetable beds.
