Our project aimed to establish the school’s own bush tucker garden with native edible plants next to our existing kitchen garden. Our students were involved in the Tucker Bush incursion where they learnt about the Noongar seasons and what bush food was available during each season. The students were involved in learning about the edible parts of each plant.
Then they worked with a partner to establish the bush tucker garden. Students loved smelling and tasting the leaves and will be learning how to maintain the garden and care for the plants. They particularly enjoyed getting their hands dirty when digging the holes and planting. We look forward to the participation of our Indigenous community members during NAIDOC Week and various times throughout the year to harvest and cook with the edible native plants. We will be sharing and utilising the teacher resources provided by Tucker Bush throughout the school to continue the project. A garden club will be running at lunchtimes to maintain the bush tucker garden following the guidelines provided by the Tucker Bush team.
