“Making our garden happy” was a project that enabled us to build our existing garden to a point where we have developed a better native habitat which introduced protection for our birds and insects through the addition of native flora and fauna and additional bird houses. The students were able to participate in the process required for the conception of a garden, through to a well-established garden. They were able to take ownership in the project and incorporate the process into their studies. The children loved the learning journey, of watching something develop and become a place of pride in our school, which they helped develop. They particularly enjoyed the hands on digging, planting and watering. This hands on participation enabled them to achieve something that through their efforts, they have been able to improve the gardens appearance, while watching how it has helped encourage birds and insects into our improved space. Unfortunately because of COVID-19 we didn’t encourage as much community involvement as we would have liked. We were able to work with students, parents and staff to achieve a very successful project which impacted our land care beliefs.
