Cultural Garden

Cass Gumnut Early Learning Centre - Campsie

Our project aimed to bring children, families, educators and the outer community together as they connect to nature and each other creating a cultural garden. The Cultural garden provided a space for people to work together to create a beautiful space, as well as learning about the different cultural vegetables from the cultures within our community. It is a place where people can slow down from their busy schedule and take in the various colours, textures and smells from the garden. Our children were involved in the project from start to finish, including the design stage, preparing and cleaning our garden from existing weeds, putting new soil, decorating the garden with rock paintings and planting the various vegetables. Our students loved learning the science behind a seed germination and exploring the natural world. We love getting our hands dirty as we dug and prepared our garden. Using the soil from our compost bin, the children were excited to find some worms and food scraps which had not broken down. Our Children particularly enjoyed working together to decorate the garden as well as collecting their food scraps from afternoon tea to feed the worms. We enjoyed having some families join their children in this project and our children were so excited to have them. We have been able to give our children more opportunity to taste different vegetables which may be unfamiliar to them as it may be from another culture. By having a worm farm our children are more aware of saving their food scraps for the worm farm or putting them in the compost as food for the garden. The community was involved in sharing seeds with the children and helping our children to prepare the garden.
