Vegetable Garden

Coal Point Public School

The goal of our project was to create a better garden area for our vegetables and herbs. With the grant funds, we purchased two large, raised garden beds, compost, hay, vegetable seeds and seedlings. Volunteers paved the area for the garden beds to improve accessibility and reduced weeds and ongoing maintenance. The garden beds were initially planted with winter vegetables – beetroot, garlic, leeks, celery, spinach, broad beans & sugar snaps. The plants were cared for by the children and last term a variety of produce was picked and eaten in class. The garden beds have since been replanted recently with summer vegetables that were raised in seed pots by the children as part of their science unit. Tomatoes, corn, zucchini, beans and lettuce will be harvested later this year with the plan to sell through the school canteen.
