Making Compost Hot Stuff: a learning opportunity about reducing landfill and enriching soil

Chatham Primary School

The goal of this project was to reinvigorate our school’s composting facilities and address a gap in knowledge and practice to undertake effective composting. The students (and their teachers and parents) learnt why school and home composting efforts can make a significant reduction in waste going to landfill, and reduction in the release greenhouse gases, which contributes to climate change. Students also learnt the biological science related to the compost process, the importance of oxygen, water, microorganisms, nitrogen and carbon elements. They also learnt about the biology of worms, their life cycle and requirements.
