Composting – Turning Waste into Something Usable

Cobbitty Public School

Our assisted students from across the school to become actively involved with understanding and developing practices that promoted sustainability in order to enhance the wellbeing of the environment. The project was led by a small group of students who formed a Composting Team. These students met weekly to research and learn about composting. They developed their leadership skills by preparing informative presentations and posters that they delivered to all classes across the school. As a result of these presentations, each class became involved in the collection of waste materials for the school compost bin. Members of the Composting Team took responsibility for collecting these materials each day and taking them to the compost area. The project enabled the school to upgrade the school vegetable gardens with the expansion of the area to include a new greenhouse, compost bin and signage to promote composting. The project directly led to a reduction in the amount of food waste placed into the general rubbish each day as well as providing a valuable product to improve the quality of the soil within the school gardens.
